Manhattan Skyline at Dusk

I’m just back from 3 days in New York where I had a terrific time (despite much grief over trying to use a tripod in various places that don’t like people stabilising their camera). I have a busy week ahead so likely won’t be posting much but you can be sure there will be plenty more Manhattan HDR in the blog’s future.

This shot was taken from the ”Top of the Rock” observation deck in the Rockefeller Center (where, as it happens, they don’t allow tripods). The lens choice was dictated by the weight my Gorillapod could carry and not wobble too horribly in the stiff breeze up there.

If you are interested in taking this kind of shot, you may find the ”Shooting Skylines at Night” entry over on my tutorials page some help.

This is a strong image Dave! Not overly keen on HDR, however, this is a super-good shot; lovin’ those strong lights & the good angle you’ve chosen.

Great shot! I’ve always wanted to go up there and get some shots. It sucks you can’t use a tripod anywhere like this. They said the same thing at the Stratosphere in Las Vegas. Where else did you run in to issues?

Thanks all! @graphicnatured, in NY I had a couple of problems aside from Rockefeller Center (which was by far the worst). Grand Central Station requires you to have a tripod permit and the Chrysler Building and St. Patrick’s Cathedral don’t allow tripods at all. Outdoor shots from sidewalks were all fine (except for the Rockefeller Center where they insisted I move onto the roadway if I wanted to use the tripod).

[…] posted another image taken at about the same time here earlier. I’m not sure which I prefer. Your opinions in the comments would be greatly […]
