Once again, it’s time for something completely different. Aside from taking macro photos of insects and other creepy crawlies I find around our house, I don’t do a lot of wildlife photography. I really love this kind of photography and would be very interested in doing a lot more were in not for the fact that I can’t afford the kind of glass you need to fill the frame with most animals and birds. I love looking at the work of Will and Matt Burrard-Lucas and Moose Peterson but am always put off when I realise that the glass they are using costs about the same as a small car.
Sometimes, however, I am lucky enough to be within 300mm range of cool critters and I get a few nice shots.
This shot was taken at a small but rather excellent nature preserve on South Padre Island at the very tip of Texas. The area is criss-crossed with boardwalks and is teeming with birds, fish and, allegedly, at least one large alligator. I suspect the fact that it lies on the outflow of the island’s sewerage treatment plant may be helping encourage many of the creatures to visit.
I’m not 100% sure of my identification here so, if you know that this isn’t a White Rumped Sandpiper, please let me know and I’ll update the post.

This is different for you but very nicely shot.
atmtx´s last post ..Terminal B at Mineta San Jose Airport – San Jose- California
No, this is definitely not a White-rumped Sandpiper. This bird has yellow legs and a moderately long bill, neither of which does the White-rumped Sandpiper have. So I believe it is a Greater Yellowlegs.
Excellent photo!
