As you are probably aware, Texas is suffering from one of the worst droughts since records began. We’ve had ridiculously little rain in the last 18 months and things don’t look as if they will get better any time soon.
Austin’s usual average annual rainfall according to the National Weather Service is a little over 35 inches. In the first 8 months of 2011, we had just over 8 inches and about half of that probably fell on a single day back in May as far as I can remember. At our home, I can only remember 3 decent storms since the turn of the year and none of those dropped more than a couple of inches. We’re in trouble.
This image shows a pond fairly close to where we live. It’s the last in a short chain of drainage ponds in a housing development and I suspect they are there primarily as a supply in the event of the fire department needing water quickly. As you can see, it’s almost completely dry.
Very good picture, amazing what cellphones can do these days. Hope you guys get some rain soon. BTW if all goes well then next year I will be down in Austin (going to the F1 GP). If times allows maybe a photo walk.
Thanks, Eje. I must get back over there with the DSLR and shoot a few more images. The iPhone picture is fine at blog resolution but it wouldn’t blow up very far.
I suspected you may be heading this way for the race next year. I’m keen to go too but will have to wait and see how much tickets are and just how awful the traffic problem at the track is going to be (predictions of 12 hours to clear the parking lots currently!). If you’re in town, let me know and we can definitely get together and shoot.
Very powerful photograph, Dave.
