Grasshopper on Lantana

This grasshopper, sitting on one of the lantana bushes in our front yard, kindly modeled for me as I tested out the Olympus 100-400mm lens last weekend.

This is a handheld shot using the lens with a 2x teleconverter, zoomed to a 35mm equivalent focal length of 1470mm. I was about 5 feet from the bush and the insect was somewhere between 2 and 3 inches long. Once again, the system’s image stabilization system did a great job, allowing me to use a very much longer shutter speed than would be expected when shooting a telephoto lens as long as that.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/13
  • Camera: E-M1MarkII
  • Focal length: 737mm
  • ISO: 320
  • Shutter speed: 1/250s
