Vermillion Flycatcher

For our New Year’s Day walk, Drew and I visited the unattractively named Soil Conservation Site 1 Reservoir in Kyle this afternoon after reading about it on various web sites that claim it is one of the top couple of birdwatching locations in the county. We weren’t disappointed at all, seeing dozens of species of bird, several of which I’ve never seen before.

The highlight of the trip was a sighting of this male Vermillion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus) which flitted around the area for long enough that we got a couple of decent (though, admittedly, not excellent) images.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/9.5
  • Camera: E-M1MarkII
  • Focal length: 560mm
  • ISO: 3200
  • Shutter speed: 1/1000s
