Aircrew member Rob Wickman in his position as aft scanner sits in the APU compartment in B-29 Superfortress FiFi’s tail section during a flight over Central Texas on October 3rd, 2021. FiFi, one of only two airworthy B-29s in the world, visited San Marcos, Texas as part of the 2021 AirPower History Tour.
Three crew members were present in the gunnery section of the aircraft during our flight – one in each of the left and right observation bubbles checking engines and control surfaces, and one in the rear compartment. Passengers occupied 6 seats, three along each side of the fuselage. While the view was probably less good than I would have had from the cockpit, we had the benefit that we could walk around the plane during flight and experience various positions including the fire controller’s seat below the top observation bubble and the tailgunner’s position.
