Flint Hills Cattle Pens

I’m spending the week up in Kansas again, working remotely from my son’s apartment in Lawrence, so I’ll try to post pictures taken each day during travel or morning walks. The first was from my journey up here yesterday when my curiosity finally got the better of me and made me pull over to look at these cattle pens, advertised as a scenic viewpoint on the Kansas Turnpike about 90 miles south of my ultimate destination. It was a grey and drizzly morning so I only spent 10 minutes there but the location on a slight hill does give a good impression of how expansive the plains are. Getting a good image of the overall vista was tricky, though, so I concentrated on the pens and loading chutes instead.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/9.5
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 8mm
  • ISO: 250
  • Shutter speed: 1/125s
