A sea otter (Enhydra lutris) floats on her back in a cove of one of Alaska’s Inian Islands, September 13th, 2023. The naturalist on board our ship tells me that this is almost certainly a female due to the wound on her nose. Apparently otter mating is a pretty violent process during which the male often bites and holds the female by the nose.
