Leaving the Chute

I spent a lot more time shooting behind-the-scenes than I did photographing the action in the arena last Saturday. I did grab a few shots of the riders in action, though, and this is one of my favourites. This event also offered me an opportunity to try out two new pieces of equipment in a low light sport environment for the first time – the Nikon D810 and my Tamron 150-600mm telephoto lens. The high ISO ability of the new camera was fantastic and gave me the ability to use the slow telephoto with a shutter speed fast enough to capture the action. This is an example of one of those shots, taken at 12,800ISO in the arena lighting.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/5.3
  • Camera: CORPORATION
  • Focal length: 220mm
  • ISO: 12800
  • Shutter speed: 1/500s
