As an aircraft-obsessed child, I always knew the C-47 (or civilian DC-3) as the Dakota or Skytrain and it seems these were UK-specific names for the aircraft. I gather that the name Dakota may have been derived from the abbreviation “DACoTA” for “Douglas Aircraft Company Transport Aircraft.”
