Flukes

A humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) shows its flukes prior to diving in the Inian Islands of Alaska on September 13th, 2023. Compared to some other animals we saw and tried to photograph, humpback whale flukes were pretty easy to capture once you found the whale (which was generally a trickier problem). When feeding, they typically take 3 or 4 breaths before diving so, if you see a whale blow and can tell which direction it is moving, you will generally be able to catch the flukes shortly afterwards as they throw them into the air prior to making a deep dive.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/6
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 210mm
  • ISO: 3200
  • Shutter speed: 1/750s
