Potash Ponds

These multi-coloured evaporation ponds can be found outside Moab in Utah and form part of the operation of Intrepid Potash Inc. Mineral-laden brine is pumped from underground into these shallow ponds from which the water slowly evaporates leaving behind the salt deposits. Initially dyed blue to speed the process, the solution changes colour as the concentration of minerals increases yielding this patchwork of different shades.
