Cathedral Rock in IR

After failing to take any infra-red images during the Antarctica trip (I had great plans for images of textured icebergs under dark skies but the weather didn’t cooperate), I broke the camera out again during our recent visit to Sedona in Arizona and this is one of the results. This image of Cathedral Rock was taken in Crescent Moon Ranch where pools of water by the creekside offer great reflection opportunities.

When I switched to OM System cameras a few years back, I converted my old OM-D E-M5 mk II to infrared but have had less success with it than my prior Nikon D5000 and am still figuring out the best workflow. The camera itself is great but the OM Workspace software just doesn’t seem to allow me to move the white balance far enough to create the colour contrast I could get using Nikon’s tools (Lightroom still has the same white balance problem). I’m now experimenting with custom camera profiles and this is working better but I’m still not back to where I was with the prior setup. Work continues…

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/5.6
  • Camera: E-M5MarkII
  • Focal length: 17mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/350s
