The blog has been rather quiet recently since I’ve been out of town working at a couple of FIRST Robotic Competitions. These are fabulous events – high school students are given a set of competition rules and 6 weeks to produce a robot that can compete against others in some task. At the end of the build period, the teams get together and compete (or, more accurately, cooperate in alliances) to accomplish the set task.
Aside from the fact that the robots are interesting and it must be great fun to be involved in the technical side, I was struck by how many fans turned out to support their teams. Here are a group of kids cheering on their drivers during one of the matches.
This picture was taken in the San Diego Sports Arena where the lighting was rather poor. It uses high ISO, slow shutter speed and the on-camera flash to partially freeze the image. I normally aim for images which are as crisp as possible but here I rather like the movement so I’m breaking my usual rule.
