Incongruous Sofa, Johnson City, Texas

I showed you the incongruous Johnson City sofa in yesterday’s shot but here it is again in close-up. I hadn’t intended posting this today but David Nightingale posted his shot of the sofa today so I reckoned it would be appropriate after all.

Comparing the two shots, I definitely prefer David’s. I deliberately shot from a higher position to minimise the amount of sky in the frame but his shot, which is taken from lower, works rather better, I reckon, regardless of the brighter background.

I seem to remember a few years back that there was a photographer who carried a red, Chesterfield sofa around a bunch of US landmarks and photographed it against dramatic backgrounds. The background here isn’t particularly exciting but I wonder if this was the last stop in the tour?

I like your composition more than Nightengale’s, Dave. But I feel better about the color tone of David Nightengale’s image. Regardless, both of you have demonstrated how the incongruity of a found object to its surroundings makes an interesting image.

I think you’re being a bit harsh on your version – it’s very effective.

Scott – ever the diplomat 🙂 Thanks.

Tom – glad you like it!

Wayne – as ever, it’s all down to personal taste. I prefer David’s composition but am not 100% sold on his magenta foliage.

David – many thanks. Some guy taught me these really useful colour modification tricks last weekend 🙂

Dave I have not seen David’s photo yet but this photo would be hard to beat. What a capture!

Thanks Mark! Oddly enough, I found the sofa in another of the blogs I follow today. You can find it in the middle of Carol Watson’s post today too.
