Bean There, Done That

I’ve fallen in love with downtown Chicago and, specifically, Millenium Park. I was up there on business (at another FIRST Robotics Competition) and managed to fit in a couple of photo shoots, one in the very early (and cold) morning with Matty Wolin (aka ShutterRunner) and another in the (ever so slightly warmer) evening with Charles Dastodd. Both Matty and Charles were very kind to spend some time showing me great locations and telling me about the city history and architecture.

This shot shows a partial skyline reflection in the Bean, a truly outstanding piece of urban art in Millenium Park which also features some other superb examples of both large-scale sculpture and architecture (yes, they have a Gehry there too). More images of some of these features will no doubt appear here shortly though, with so much to see in only one evening, I didn’t shoot anything like all the possible subjects down there!

Given that Chicago is my hometown, I’m certainly partial to it. Now that you’ve shot there imagine how hard it is for me to restrain myself and remain a family man when I take my kids on our annual Chicago downtown trip! I’m always tempted to abandon them and just shoot photographs…

Glad you enjoyed the trip and that’s a great shot of the bean. Endless possibilities in that one spot alone…

Thanks, Mike. I could spend a couple of weeks in Millenium Park alone! What a great place with so many fascinating example of superb urban sculpture and interesting architecture. I must get back there soon.

Great composition and framing of the “bean.” Chi-town is my favorite big city. Lived there for nearly 20 yrs. RE: photo – is this a single exposure, tonemap?
