Conch in Sea Grass, Grand Bahama

You’ve probably noticed the lack of posts over the last week or so. I’ve been off on vacation with the family and was too disorganised to schedule pictures every day while we were away. Now that we’re back, though, things should pick up again.

This year’s summer trip was a cruise to the Bahamas and Key West out of Galveston on Carnival Conquest. We stopped in Nassau, Freeport and Key West and enjoyed ourselves enormously.

This shot was taken during our stop in Freeport when our family headed off on a kayaking and beach trip with the great folks at Calabash Eco-Adventures. I had the G9 with me in its waterproof housing and was determined to shoot some pictures while snorkeling. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas and the snorkeling was replaced by a visit to probably the most gorgeous beach on the planet so I had to make do with underwater pictures taken while paddling instead. This one shows a Queen or Pink Conch (Strombus gigas) beside a patch of sea grass and was shot in about 12 inches of water with the camera placed on the sand. You can read more about the life cycle of these conchs here.

The flow of water over the shell is mesmerizing Dave, and the dappled light on the sand just completes a wonderful capture.

Thanks, folks. This is one of my favourite pictures from the trip so far. I loved the light on the sand and the softness introduced by all the sand particles in the water. I have to thank my 8 year-old for finding the conch while he was wandering around the beach.
