I had the pleasure of spending yesterday evening with a group of photographers granted media access to the Texas Roller Derby match between the Cherry Bombs and the Rhinestone Cowgirls at Palmer Events Center in downtown Austin. I had visited a match once before and realised that it would make a great photographic opportunity so it was great to return with a camera.
The only real disappointment in the evening was the state of the lighting in the event center. On my previous visit, there had been a rock-concert-like lighting rig above the track and light levels didn’t appear to pose a problem. Yesterday, however, that rig had disappeared and we were left with the hideous mixture of tungsten and flourescent offered by the unaugmented event center lighting. As a result, ISO was high the whole evening but at least we did manage to use a bit of fill flash to brighten the faces a bit.
I have more images coming up so I’ll add a bit more information about the game in the descriptions of those pictures. For the meantime, though, here is Cherry Bombs jammer Sacrilicious bombing around the banked curve as she races to catch up with the rest of the pack.
Despite the horrible lighting conditions that you describe, this is a great action shot. Love the angle of the skater, the shadow and the subtle amount of blur – excellent!

You are too nice, Viveca! The “subtle blur” is what happens when you’re already shooting at 3200ISO and don’t want to go to 6400 to allow the shutter speed to be moved to where it really needed to be 🙂
Wonderful action shot, Dave! Just enough blur that you can sense action and movement! This reminds me of the movie “Whip It!”.
