Atlas and St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York

This probably falls into the category of “New York Shots Everyone Needs To Take” but I still like it. This is actually a tricky shot to take since the minute you cross an invisible line and enter Rockefeller Center carrying a tripod, you will be approached by a security guard and told you can’t use it. He will then hang around to make sure you comply. As you move around, you are handed off from one security guy to the next until you finally leave. While there, don’t even think about putting all 3 feet of the tripod on the ground, even while handlholding a shot, since this is apparently a big no-no and will cause your security guard tail to become quite irate and demand that you place the tripod flat, on its side, on the ground since this is apparently less of a risk to the general populous.

As you can tell, the security folks at Rockefeller Center really annoyed me.

It saddens me to hear each instance of security guards causing photographers grief. It seems quite silly to me. Love the perspective on this shot Dave, the lines from the buildings frame the statue quite nicely.

Beautiful shot! Jesse Pafundi, Brian Furbush and myself had the same experience here, I called my post “Tripod Police” – they are relentless 🙁 I was able to bracket while they were figuring out what to do with me!!

It’s everywhere these days. I had the same hassle in LA a few weeks ago. I know it’s just guys trying to follow their rules so I try not to give them a hard time but it does get annoying. You managed to get a great shot though.

Nice shot, wonder if I can get anything close with 24mm. Yea, the security guards can be a real pain in tha a$$, but I guess they are doing what they get paid to do.

Why it makes perfect sense, lay your fully extended trip on its side, on the ground, then some tourist with a point and shoot will walk by with his head tilted up taking in the scenery, trip over your tripod, break his neck, and sue the bejeezus out of Rockefeller Center. Smart policy security department, you must be on the payroll of a big litigation firm.

This is a terrific image, Dave, glad you risked it and shared it.

Nice angle. Looks like it was worth the hassle with the security guards.

Very nice angle/composition and tone. I worked (consulted) in the building who’s doors are right behind where you stood to take this shot. Funny how I’ve walked past that countless times and never looked at it from that angle. And yeah, you think those security guards are fun with a tripod, try walking through those doors with Rack Mountable servers in on a cart 😉
