Cypress Root and Stream

I miss large trees. Most of the trees in the Texas hill country are cedar or live oak which barely scrape their way out of the “brush” classification as far as I’m concerned. Some of the only trees that really do look tall and majestic in this area are the cypress that grow along river banks. This year, with the drought we’ve been having, many of them are badly stressed but the ones along the banks of the Pedernales River appeared to be doing fine.

Here’s a detail shot of the roots of one of these trees and the water swirling past. For the technically inclined, it’s a 5 shot HDR converted to monochrome and toned. My aim was to pull out the bark texture and contrast this with the smoothness of the water.

I really like the amount of detail in the tree roots and the movement in the water. Nice capture Dave!

Really beautiful shot Dave. I love the way you’ve processed it and I think you achieved what you were after.

This shot is amazing, I saw the post in twitter and I was like, monochrom HDR?! What the heck!
when I see this shot I was amazed by the beauty of contrasts blending into the frame. Outstanding composition. It’s been a while since I enjoyed an innovative shot like this.

Thanks, Ali. I love monochrome HDR (you can find quite a few in my portfolio). It’s such a pleasant change from all the oversaturated muck that so many people assume represents HDR these days!
