DSHS Tiger Band

The boys and I spent the evening yesterday at the Dripping Springs homecoming game. I love local high school football but, oddly enough, not for the sport (I have no idea how the game went). The thing that makes these experiences so enjoyable to me is the amazing community spirit – everyone goes to the games and the atmosphere is amazing.

Dripping Springs High School has one of the best marching bands in Central Texas. Their programs are fantastic – I have no idea how the kids remember not only the music (which I could probably manage) but also the intricate matching patterns (which I would certainly get hopelessly lost during).

I was a band-geek at school but our school band was, frankly, rather terrible (sorry to any Lanark Grammar music teachers who may be reading. Maybe things have improved since?). I did, however, play with a couple of good bands including the county youth concert band so I know how great it feels to be part of a really tight instrumental group and I bet it’s a blast being in a band like the DSHS Tiger Band.

You can see all my picks from this game (most of which are of the band!) over on my SmugMug site.

Great pictures. I agree with your statements of community spirit and the band program. The Tiger Band is truly exceptional and has been growing, not only in maturity but also complexity of the music and performance over the years. We have been watching them for 7 years now with our daughter in the program, and graduated, and now our son. It’s amazing what they learn by just being in the program. It is, by far, the best extra-curricular activity a student can be involved with at the school.

Thanks, Ron. I have a son playing baritone horn in middle school just now and am thoroughly looking forward to becoming a bona-fide band dad in a couple of years! Actually, that may make it easier for me to get access to the field during games too 🙂
