Reflection Abstract & iPad Woes

I’m testing my proposed workflow for photo processing and blog posting via my new iPad so let’s see if this works. My idea is to be able to travel light – no laptop, minimal glass – during our summer trip this year but I’m having a few problems. Here are the tools I was planning to use:

  1. iPad and camera connection kit to get raw images into the iPad from the cameras I’ll be taking.
  2. PhotoSmith on the iPad to handle the raw files and allow me to sort, reject and export JPEGs.
  3. Snapseed, Photogene, Photoshop Touch and Filterstorm for editing and resizing.
  4. Upload to PhotoQ on my blog and post as normal.

So far, I’ve hit quite a few snags:

  1. You can’t delete images from within third party apps on the iPad. How am I supposed to do serious editing if I can’t delete the rejects? I can delete from within the iPad’s own photo app but this has no knowledge of the reject flags I placed on the images inside Photosmith. This is going to be a pain unless I can move rejects to a separate album and then just delete them all from there. I’m still working on this.
  2. Here’s the doozy – I can’t upload files from my iPad to either the WordPress media gallery or PhotoQ using the normal web-based interface that both of these use! In both cases, the buttons on the UI to allow file selection are either completely absent or greyed out. Ugh!

For the time being, I’ve configured Filterstorm to allow me to export images via FTP to a known directory on the photoblog server and, from there, I can get them into posts by manually entering the URL to the image. That’s what I’ve done here and we’ll see if it works. My worry here is that, because I’m completely bypassing the PhotoQ plug-in I use to show the main image on the page, these posts will be horribly ill-formatted. Time to press “Preview” and find out…

(Later) After a lot of hacking around, I think I’ve figured out how to do this so I should be OK to post while I’m away on vacation this summer. Now, I wonder if the thumbnails are messed up?

(Later still) Yes, the thumbnail for the post is completely absent. Since the text link is still there, though, I can live with this for the small number of posts I’ll be doing from the road. Looking back 3 years, I wish I hadn’t chosen this gallery management plug-in since it’s now apparently completely unsupported (and I’m no PHP expert).

I understand your frustrations with the photos, I’ve recently stumbled upon That problem myself. One app that does help me is Goodreader. It acts more like a file structure, it directly let’s you import photos from the photo app, and supports the “open in” function. The only thing it doesn’t do it backwards update to the Photo app, but once I have everything organized in Goodreader, I just delete the photos in Photo app. Connect that with a FTP and Dropbox and you can be totally mobile. Might be worth a shot.

    Jordin,

Thanks for the suggestion. The only problem I still have relates to not being able to upload using the UI that PhotoQ provides. This requires the ability to do file upload from within the browser using a “Browse…” type of interface. I can FTP from various other applications and I can use DropBox too but, unfortunately, no solution I’ve found yet gives me the ability to do HTTP file uploads.
