Where Flowers Bloom

A quote from First Lady Lady Bird Johnson outside the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin,Texas.

During her time as First Lady and after leaving the White House, Lady Bird Johnson was a crusader for the cause of beautification, believing strongly that more beauty would have significant effects on the nation’s mental health and contribute to a better society overall. Her work can be seen in the Highway Beautification Act of 1965 which limited billboards on major roads and either closed or screened junkyards visible from freeways.

Her legacy is very obvious in Texas where the verges of most major roads burst into colour each Spring thanks to wildflower seeding programs. In Austin, you will also find the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, an organization supported by Mrs. Johnson right up until her death in 2007.
