We’re back at 2012’s Austin Rodeo today.
It’s not often that I review pictures I’ve shot and think “I wish I hadn’t got in as close as that”. Most of the time, getting in really tight and filling the frame with my subject is something I try to do but in this case, I wish I had more of the horse in the shot. Yes, this image catches the expression on the rider’s face quite nicely, but a vertical shot including the horse’s head would, I think, have been a lot more interesting.
My excuse here, though, was that I was shooting with a fixed 300mm f/2.8 lens and didn’t have the option to shoot wider so this is what I got. I still like the shot a lot but perhaps this year I’ll either go with the 70-200mm or head the opposite direction and rent a 400mm to get in really tight.
I think it works because the horses head is out of the frame. There is aenough information to tell us exactly whats going on whilst concentrating the viewers focus on the rider. So, I think this image works very well!
