The northern end of Petrified Forest National Park is crossed by the line of the iconic Route 66 and there’s a memorial of sorts on the park road where it crosses the old road. It seems rather appropriate that the memorial to a road that is now largely a piece of history, thanks to the building of the interstate highway system, should be a rusted old car.
During our trip, we left the interstate a few times and saw sections of Route 66 in Tucumcari, New Mexico and Holbrook, Arizona. Both towns, or, at least, the sections bordering Route 66, appeared to have stopped changing some time in the 1950s. It was fascinating to see so much old architecture and, in some cases, disturbing that so many once-thriving businesses had been starved of custom and ceased trading when the interstates bypassed the towns.
