Dampers, Holly Street Power Plant

Back in 2011, a group of local photographers were invited by Austin Energy to visit and photograph the newly decommissioned Holly Street Power Plant. We had a fantastic afternoon exploring the turbine hall, boilers and control rooms.

As is usual, I shot way more pictures that I processed at the time and I was pleasantly surprised to discover some gems as I was perusing the archive last week. I’ll run a few over the remainder of this week.

The first shows a row of springs in part of the mount for one of the turbines. I assume these are for vibration damping but perhaps some mechanical engineer out there can correct me.

By the way, the “5 Day Deal” expires at lunchtime tomorrow so, if you are interested in taking advantage, today’s the day to do it. Even if you’re not interested in the $89 deal, you can still sign up for a giveaway of $5000 in prizes including a Sony A7 camera. By way of status, the 5 Day Deal site has already raised almost $30,000 for the charities it is supporting since opening on Sunday afternoon.
