US Marine Corps War Memorial

It’s Memorial Day in the US today and, while looking for appropriate images to post, I noticed that this one had never appeared on the blog. I shot this some time back in the late 1980s or early 1990s on Fujichrome during a trip to Washington D.C. It shows Felix W. de Weldon’s 78 foot tall bronze statue at the US Marine Corps War Memorial.

The statue was based on Joe Rosenthal’s Pulitzer prize-winning photograph of marines raising the flag over Iwo Jima during the Second World War. It was dedicated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in November 1954.
