Sebastian Vettel, current Formula 1 world champion driver, driving his RB-10 at Circuit of the Americas, Austin prior to this year’s United States Grand Prix. Vettel won last year’s race at CoTA but, with the change of power train in the cars, he’s been struggling this year and is currently only 4th in the drivers’ championship with less than half the points of leader Lewis Hamilton and only one race left in the season.
For the technically inclined...
Beautiful photo but I have a question regarding the exposure. What do you mean by -3/6EV? was it at -3? and you still managed to get 1/350 at F/19?
I’m a photographer but haven’t done racing photos, which I could or had the chance though as I love F1.

“-3/6EV” is the camera being silly and not reporting this as “-1/2EV”. I underexposed by half a stop. I should really have shot this at 200ISO instead of 400 but I had been wanting really fast shutter speeds just before this and I didn’t reduce the ISO when I went back to shooting at slower speeds. Looking at this 1/350 at f/19 doesn’t sound unreasonable to me given how bright it was that day. Think of the “Sunny 16” rule – on a sunny day, your exposure is usually something like 1/100th at f/16 with ISO 100. That translates to about 1/400 at ISO 400 so my 1/350 at f/19 is about half a stop lower.
