Several famous bridges cross the river Tyne in the northern English city of Newcastle. The new Millennium Bridge, seen in the foreground here, tilts to 45 degrees to allow passage of tall ships. The Tyne Bridge in the background, an instantly-recognisable symbol of Tyneside, was opened in 1928 and was built by the same company that later went on to build the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland.
