If you happen to find yourself on the island of Mull off Scotland’s west coast, you should definitely find time to take a day trip to Iona, a very small island off Mull’s south-western tip with a great deal of fascinating history. Christianity was planted in Scotland via Iona when St. Columba crossed from Ireland and founded the abbey on the island in 563AD or thereabouts. The abbey is remarkable – a place of unusual, almost spooky, tranquility. This island is now home base for the Iona Community, a dispersed, ecumenical Christian community working for peace, social justice, community building and the renewal of worship.
