Behind Rippy’s

Rippy’s Feed Store sits on Mercer Street in the heart of Dripping Springs. We were wandering around it on Saturday as part of a 4-H photography group meeting and I liked the way the light was hitting this area near the old loading dock. The shot proved to be a great illustration of the dynamic range of the Nikon D810. I couldn’t believe how much detail I was able to pull our of the hard shadows and how well Lightroom 5 could control the highlight areas in direct sun. This is a single exposure – no HDR here. Had I not been in a bit of a hurry, though, this is a scene that I would normally have bracketed on the assumption that there would be no way the camera could capture everything with a single exposure. I guess I need to reset my expectations now that I have the new camera!

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/6.7
  • Camera: CORPORATION
  • Focal length: 35mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/180s
