Looking Up

Having spent last night in the company of a large number of Austin’s finest photojournalists, I had to post a documentary image today. I left Austin Photo Night feeling starstruck and vastly outclassed but, at the same time, inspired by some of the great work the folks there were showing. One piece in particular resonated with me. James Gregg, Deputy Photo Editor at the Austin American-Statesman, showed various multimedia pieces he had created and one of those was on the topic of bull riding – a 90 second or so montage of video and stills shot over a weekend over a soundtrack of interviews with the riders. It was fabulous and got me keen to expand on the work I’ve been doing at Dripping Springs Ranch Park recently.

This picture is one of my favourites from last year’s Brent Thurman Memorial bull riding event there.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/2.8
  • Camera: NIKON D810
  • Focal length: 35mm
  • ISO: 1600
  • Shutter speed: 1/90s

I agree – the kid makes the picture to me.
