Cowboy Generations

Sometimes, you click that shutter and just know you have an image that’s special. This shot, taken at last night’s rodeo in Dripping Springs, falls into that category for me. Watching the way that the father was interacting with his son was enormously touching – they spent quite some time up on the chutes with Dad showing son the ropes (quite literally). I took a few candids of them but had to ask them to pose and this was the resulting image.

I’ve added a monochrome version of this shot to my rodeo portraits gallery (which is all monochrome) but I actually prefer the colour version in this case. If you know who this cowboy is, please let me know since I would love to get a copy of this picture to him.

Edit 8/8/16:  Thanks for the lead, Sarah! Apparently this is Tommy Moe. I’ve sent him a message and hope to be in touch soon.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/5.6
  • Camera: NIKON D700
  • Focal length: 62mm
  • ISO: 1600
  • Shutter speed: 1/350s
