Staffa III




The most famous feature on Staffa is Fingal’s Cave which you can access by walking along a row of basalt columns just above the high tide mark from the landing jetty. The tourist path extends 30 feet or so inside the cave and people crowd in to hear the crash of waves echoed by the famed acoustics. The cave first became a popular tourist attraction in 1829 when Felix Mendelssohn, inspired by the strange echoes within the cave, wrote his overture “The Hebrides” and it took on the popular name of “The Fingal’s Cave Overture”.
