Big Bertha, the Longhorn Band’s 8 foot diameter bass drum, is a well-known and well-loved sight at football games in Texas Memorial Stadium. Originally built in 1922 for the University of Chicago, Bertha moved to Austin in 1955 and has been a Longhorn Band fixture ever since. The drum can be seen in the north end zone during all games in the stadium and is tended by a group known as the “Bertha Crew”.
