Lunar Eclipse Progression

I decided to jump on the Super Blood Wolf Moon bandwagon last night (who was it that let the press get hold of lunar eclipses? The whole addition of adjectives thing is getting ridiculous) and here’s my result. This is a composite of five shots taken over a period of about 45 minutes as the moon entered the Earth’s shadow. Given that it’s a composite, the technical information below represents only the last shot in the series. The earlier ones, before the moon was totally covered, were 1/500 at f/8 ISO 400 (yes, the moon really is that bright).

If you are interested in knowing exactly how I produced this image, you can find a step-by-step tutorial in a guest post I wrote over on the Imagely web site.

Prints of this image are available via the “Buy Print” button above (which may not be visible if you are browsing on a mobile device) or on my Pixels gallery.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/6.7
  • Camera: NIKON D500
  • Focal length: 500mm
  • ISO: 1600
  • Shutter speed: 1/2s

It should be right at the bottom left of the main image in the post. I just took a look on my phone and noticed that it doesn’t appear there! I’ll make this picture available elsewhere and add a link as soon as I’ve posted it. Apologies!

I’ve just added a new direct link to a source of prints for this image. You can find it at https://pixels.com/featured/eclipse-progression-dave-wilson.html.
