Drifting Z

The Nissan Z models appear to be very popular cars for drifting and there were at least half a dozen taking part in last Sunday’s “Opening Moves” event held by Club Loose Texas at Alamo City Motorplex in San Antonio.

This photo gets me to Drifting Photography Lesson No. 2. When I’ve shot other motorsport, it’s generally safe to pick a super-high shutter speed for head-on images. Blur isn’t important because the wheels are pointing straight towards you and you couldn’t see the blur anyway, right? Not so in drifting where the cars are moving sideways with serious lock on the steering! Next time I attend one of these meets, the golden rule will be to choose slow shutter speed and pan everything.

You can find all my pictures from the event at https://davewilson.smugmug.com/Sports/Club-Loose-Texas-Opening-Moves/ should you be interested.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/6.3
  • Camera: NIKON D500
  • Focal length: 550mm
  • ISO: 400
  • Shutter speed: 1/2000s
