Agave Americana

This century plant (agave americana) and several more like it live in the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center not far from our home. These huge succulents don’t actually live for a century but take somewhere between 10 and 30 years to reach maturity. They flower exactly once, shooting a 20 foot spire topped by an explosion of white flowers skyward right before the plant withers and dies.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/9.5
  • Camera: NIKON D500
  • Focal length: 250mm
  • ISO: 280
  • Shutter speed: 1/180s
