Radial

We’re back at the Pioneer Flight Museum in Kingsbury, Texas today. This image shows a detail of the radial engine fitted to the replica Fokker Triplane that lives there.

Although I’ve seen a lot of radial engines before, this one was interesting to me because the whole cylinder ring rotates with the propellor shaft as it’s running. This may be normal for early radials but it certainly caught me by surprise.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/22
  • Camera: NIKON D810
  • Focal length: 180mm
  • ISO: 64
  • Shutter speed: 8s
