The party went on until after midnight with dance music mixed by local DJ Darren Webb at Pride of Dripping Springs on Saturday, June 26th, 2021. I may not be much of a dancer, but I do love EDM and House music so Darren’s soundtrack was a great background for my attempts to capture the fun and movement on the dance floor.
Photographically, this was an interesting challenge. It was, of course, pretty dark but I didn’t want to spoil the atmosphere by blasting the scene with flash. To get this effect, I shot with a long shutter speed (I “dragged the shutter”) with a pop of low-power flash at the end of each exposure. It took a bit of time to juggle the flash power and basic exposure so that you can see movement and also a core of sharp image. After that, the secret was just to take a whole lot of exposures and hope that the people looked good when the flash finally fired.
