Columbia Panel

A rather more sobering image today. This panel from Space Shuttle orbiter Columbia was recovered from the debris field in Texas and Louisiana after the disaster on February 1st, 2003 which claimed the lives of all seven crew members. A damaged heat shield on the left wing caused burn-through and resulted in the complete loss of the vehicle during reentry.

The panel is now part of a memorial at Kennedy Space Center commemorating those who have given their lives during space exploration.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/4
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 12mm
  • ISO: 1600
  • Shutter speed: 1/15s
