Cornwallis Island is a 1 mile long outcrop of dramatically rugged rock and ice jutting from the Southern Ocean at the north eastern tip of the South Shetlands chain just off the north edge of the Antarctic Peninsula. We passed it at about 7:30am on the morning of December 29th and the light angle was absolutely perfect to highlight every crack in the rock cliffs. In this picture, we see the one end of the island with larger Elephant Island five miles away in the background.
