Fur Seals (Arctocephalus gazella) were everywhere on South Georgia where the current population is estimated at five million or about 95% of the world population. They were also the most territorial of the creatures we met and would often rear up and rush (as fast as a seal can) towards you if you got too close. Their displays weren’t particularly dangerous, though, since they would always back off if you just stood your ground and raised your arms in the air. The behavior is obviously learned early as can be seen by this tiny pup which was showing its fierce side when I photographed it at King Haakon Bay on December 26th.
