Western Honey Bee

I got up early this morning and headed over to the flower field at Nutty Brown Farm for an hour or so to try out a new macro flash diffuser I picked up recently. Overall, I’m delighted with the soft quality of the light it produces when used with my Godox macro flash but it will take some time to get used to having a large, white plastic extension jutting 6 inches from the front of my lens! I found I often scared off my targets by hitting leaves or stems close to them as I tried to get close enough for a good shot. I also forgot to pick up my extension tubes on the way out so had to make do with the 60mm macro lens rather than using something longer. A 40-150mm with extension tubes is my preferred setup for larger insects since I can keep a decent distance from them while still filling the frame.

Excuses aside, here’s a Western Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera) gathering nectar and pollen from a flower at the farm.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/8
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 60mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/250s
