King Haakon Bay in the north-west of the island is the site of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1916 landing on South Georgia after he and 5 other Endurance crew members sailed the lifeboat “James Caird” 850 miles to South Georgia to find help for their colleagues left behind on Elephant Island.
