El Capitan, Yosemite

An infra-red view of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, California. I took this shot back in 2012 and converted it to DNG format on import. On going back to process it, however, I discovered that the Nikon View NX software I typically use in the first part of my infra-red workflow couldn’t read the file so I had to come up with a Plan B. A bit of mucking around in Photoshop yielded a series of curves tricks that gave me a picture I could work with (transforming the horrid red/orange mess that I get out of the IR camera into something with enough contrast between the colours to allow me to work with it)  and here’s the result.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/8
  • Camera: NIKON D5000
  • Focal length: 14mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/500s
