Fall Abstract

It’s always fun to try something different and I love playing with intentional camera movement to create weird and wonderful abstract images. Fall colors are especially good for this, especially if you can find a view with a good mixture of different shades against a contrasting background. You can create different kinds of image based on different ways of holding and moving the camera during the exposure. To create the spiral effect here, I held the zoom ring steady and twisted the camera during the 1/4 second exposure. Holding the camera still and turning the zoom ring instead will cause a sunburst effect which can also be quite effective.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/13
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 25mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/4s
