Macaronis

Aside from one lost individual on the Falkland Islands, we only saw Macaroni Penguins (Eudyptes chrysolophus) in a single location during our trip. Here are a few of the members of the colony at Cooper Bay on South Georgia that we visited on December 24th. The elaborately-crested Macaronis were so named after flamboyantly-dressed 19th century British hipsters who also get a mention in the lyrics of “Yankee Doodle”.

Find all my pictures from the expedition at https://davewilson.smugmug.com/Travel/Antarctica-December-2024.
