Southern Giant Petrel Chick




Here’s another bird we saw frequently during our Antarctica trip last year. We stumbled upon this Southern Giant Petrel chick (Macronectes giganteus) sitting on a nest during our landing at Peggotty Bluff in King Haakon Bay, South Georgia on December 26th, 2024. We encountered many of these birds on beaches and following the ship but this was the only chick we saw during the expedition. We observed briefly from a distance of 20 feet or so before moving on to find the site of Shackleton’s temporary camp after landing on South Georgia back in May 1916.
