Bald Eagle

I’ll finish this series of bird pictures with one that seems rather appropriate for today, 4th of July. We spotted this Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) while zodiac cruising through the Inian Islands in southeastern Alaska back in September 2023.

While bald eagles are spectacular birds, their actual call is apparently not deemed majestic enough for many movies to use (it’s more of a high pitched screech or squeak than the noise you frequently hear associated with the bird in film). To combat this, sound editors have a habit of substituting the Red-tailed Hawk’s cry which fits people’s expectations better.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/6.3
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Exposure bias: -1EV
  • Focal length: 400mm
  • ISO: 6400
  • Shutter speed: 1/1000s
